In one you genuinely understand. You are entitled to receive the consent form translated and to have an interpreter explain risks, alternatives and what happens if something goes wrong. Signing a document in a language you do not master weakens your position if a dispute arises later. Ask for a signed, dated copy before you go into theatre.

Claiming is possible, but it happens under the law of the country where treatment took place, with its deadlines, its courts and its language. That is exactly why choosing a country with a medical council and a public register matters, along with keeping every document and paying by card. Before travelling, check whether the hospital carries liability insurance and ask for the insurer's name.

Yes. On discharge, ask for the surgical report, the anaesthesia record, imaging in digital format, lab results and the implant card. It is your documentation and you will need it for any follow-up, revision or claim. If a clinic makes difficulties about handing it over, treat that as a serious red flag.

In the European Union there is the Cross-Border Healthcare Directive: in certain cases you can be treated in another member state and claim reimbursement up to what that treatment would have cost at home, often subject to prior authorisation. It does not cover cosmetic surgery or treatments without medical indication. Check with your health authority before you travel, never after.
