Dental implants abroad: the complete guide
How many visits are really needed, which implant brand you are getting, why veneers on healthy teeth are the biggest risk in dental tourism, and how to secure the warranty.
Dentistry is the most common reason to travel for treatment, because the price gap is enormous and the procedure is highly schedulable. It is also where the most irreversible damage is done when the choice is wrong, because enamel that is removed never comes back.
The real timeline: two trips, not one
A dental implant is not resolved in a week, however it is advertised. The standard protocol has two phases separated by osseointegration, the time the bone needs to fix the implant.
• First trip, three to five days: assessment with panoramic X-ray or CT scan, extractions if needed, implant placement and a temporary.
• Waiting period, three to six months, at home.
• Second trip, three to five days: abutment, impressions and placement of the final crown.
Immediate-loading protocols exist, where a temporary prosthesis is placed the same day. They are valid in selected cases with good bone quality, not in all. If you are offered a full mouth in five days without anyone seeing your CT scan, the offer is commercial, not clinical.
Which implant brand you are getting
This is the question that saves the most money long term. Some brands have decades of scientific literature and worldwide distribution; others are budget brands with almost no presence outside their own country. The difference does not show in year one; it shows five years later, when a component needs replacing and nobody in your city stocks that part.
Demand in writing: brand, model, reference and batch number of every implant, plus the manufacturer's warranty card in your name. Without it, your local dentist cannot work on that implant without dismantling it blind.
The biggest risk in dental tourism is not implants
It is veneers and crowns on healthy teeth. A full smile makeover usually means grinding down ten to twenty teeth. If those teeth were healthy, irreversible enamel has been destroyed forever and a healthy mouth has been turned into one dependent on prosthetics for life.
Less invasive alternatives exist depending on the case: orthodontics, whitening, no-prep or minimal-prep veneers, composite bonding. If nobody has mentioned them and the plan jumps straight to grinding twenty teeth in one week, get a second opinion before boarding the plane.
Indicative prices
• Single implant with crown: 400 to 900 euros in Turkey, 500 to 1,000 in Hungary or Poland, 1,500 to 2,500 in western Europe.
• Zirconia crown: 150 to 350 euros abroad; 500 to 900 in western Europe.
• Full-arch rehabilitation on implants: 4,000 to 9,000 euros depending on implant count and materials.
Always check whether the implant price includes the abutment and the crown: it is the most common quoting trick in the sector. An implant 'at 350 euros' can end up at 800 once the two missing parts are added.
Securing the warranty from another country
A warranty that requires flying back for every check-up is worth little. Before paying, ask in writing: how long the warranty lasts, exactly what it covers, whether it covers the work or only the part, who pays for travel if something fails, and whether there is a partner network in your country.
Also keep the pre-treatment CT scan, post-treatment X-rays, the treatment report with a dental chart, and the invoices. That is the minimum package another professional needs to continue the case.
Follow-up at home
Before travelling, find a dentist in your city willing to handle follow-up. Many refuse to touch work done abroad, and discovering that after you return is a problem. One phone call in advance saves months of searching with a loose crown.
Red flags
• A closed treatment plan with no prior CT scan or X-ray.
• A full mouth in five days with no justified osseointegration phase.
• Refusal to provide implant brand and batch.
• Grinding healthy teeth without discussing alternatives.
• A verbal warranty, or one with no signed document.
• A quote that does not separate implant, abutment and crown.
Dental tourism works very well when the plan is conservative, the materials are traceable and you accept that two trips are needed. It fails when someone promises a new mouth in a week.
