Excess skin after weight loss: post-bariatric body contouring
Abdominoplasty and body lift: requirements, healing risks and destinations.
After massive weight loss, many patients find the problem is not over: excess ptotic skin causes friction dermatitis, recurrent infections in the folds, difficulty dressing and biomechanical limits when walking or exercising.
Body contouring procedures (circumferential abdominoplasty, brachioplasty and thigh lift) remove redundant skin aprons and reposition tissue. Functional satisfaction after surgery exceeds 90%, and operations are often staged to reduce cumulative surgical risk.
Some requirements should not be skipped. Weight must be stable for at least six months, nutritional blood work must be adequate (often needing correction after bariatric surgery) and there should be no active smoking, because healing complications, marginal skin necrosis and seromas are the dominant risks. Scars are extensive and permanent: accept them before surgery.
Mexico and Colombia concentrate the plastic surgeons with the most accumulated experience in massive post-bariatric reconstruction in the Americas. Turkey has become the destination of choice for European and Middle Eastern patients, with integrated post-operative recovery facilities. The range is EUR 4,500 to 9,000, with ten to fourteen day stays before flying.
